Hazrat Ali’s رضي الله عنه Love For Hazrat Umar رضي الله عنه And Being Pleased With Him As The Khalifah

The Shiah claim that Hazrat Ali رضي الله عنه was displeased with Hazrat Umar رضي الله عنه, and also that Hazrat Umar رضي الله عنه had usurped the khilaafah from him. This claim of the Shiah is baseless.

There are abundant proofs found in the Mubaarak books of Hadith that show that Hazrat Ali رضي الله عنه had great love for Hazrat Umar رضي الله عنه. The extent of his love can be gauged from the fact that he had married his daughter, Hazrat Umme Kulthoom رضي الله عنها, to Hazrat Umar رضي الله عنه. (Isaabah 8/465, Radd-ul-Muhtaar 2/198)

Furthermore, Hazrat Ali رضي الله عنه was not pleased with any person becoming the khalifah after Hazrat Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه besides Hazrat Umar رضي الله عنه. It is reported in Musannaf Ibnu Abi Shaybah (17/71) that when Hazrat Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه had fallen ill and was nearing his end, he addressed the people from his window saying, “I am about to appoint a khalifah (who will take charge of your affairs after my demise). Will you be pleased with the person whom I appoint as khalifah over you?” The people responded, “We will be pleased with whomsoever you appoint as khalifah over us.” Thereafter, Hazrat Ali رضي الله عنه stood up and said, “We will not be pleased with anyone besides Hazrat Umar رضي الله عنه.” Thereafter, Hazrat Umar رضي الله عنه was appointed by Hazrat Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه as khalifah. This was on account of the fact that Sayyiduna Rasoolullah صلى الله عليه وسلم had bore testimony to the high position of Hazrat Umar رضي الله عنه in Deen.

REFLECTIONS

Such is the esteemed status of the second khalifah of Islam, Hazrat Umar رضي الله عنه. Just the mention of his name struck terror in the hearts of the kings of his time. Even today, we are awestruck when we discuss incidents regarding him. This is most certainly an Iman-booster which is a need for each and every Ummati of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah صلی الله عليه وسلم.
