Janaazah of Sayyiduna Abu Ubaidah رضي الله عنه

Sayyiduna Mu‘aaz رضي الله عنه performed the salaah. Sayyiduna Abu ‘Ubaidah رضي الله عنه thereafter passed away. There wasn’t a person more greatly affected and saddened at the loss of Sayyiduna Abu ‘Ubaidah رضي الله عنه than Sayyiduna Mu‘aaz رضي الله عنه. (Al-Iktifaa vol. 3, pg. 307)

Sayyiduna Mu‘aaz رضي الله عنه stood up and addressed the people saying, “O people! Sincerely repent to Allah Ta‘ala from your sins, because if Allah Ta‘ala’s servant meets Him in a state of repentance, it is a right upon Allah Ta‘ala that he forgives him.”  He then said, “O people! You have lost such a person, who by Allah, I have never seen a servant of Allah Ta‘ala with a cleaner heart, free from jealousy and hatred, who had greater love for death and was always wishing well for all. So make du‘aa for him and attend his janaazah salaah, for by Allah, no one like him will ever rule over you.” The people gathered and the janaazah of Sayyiduna Abu ‘Ubaidah رضي الله عنه was brought forth. Sayyiduna Mu‘aaz رضي الله عنه went forward and performed the janaazah salaah. Thereafter he was taken to his qabr and Sayyiduna Mu‘aaz, Sayyiduna ‘Amr bin ‘Aas and Dhahhaak bin Qais رضي الله عنهم entered his grave to bury him. After burying Sayyiduna Abu ‘Ubaidah رضي الله عنه, Sayyiduna Mu‘aaz رضي الله عنه addressed Sayyiduna Abu ‘Ubaidah رضي الله عنه saying, “O Abu ‘Ubaidah! by Allah, I will praise you only regarding things that are true. If I lie, I fear that Allah Ta‘ala will punish me.  “By Allah! As far as I knew, you were from amongst those selected servants of Allah Ta‘ala who abundantly make the zikr of Allah Ta‘ala, who walk with great humility and when ignorant people speak to them, they reply peacefully. They spend their nights standing before their Rabb in salaah; when they spend, they are neither extravagant nor miserly, rather they are between the two extremes. (These are the qualities of Allah Ta‘ala’s chosen servants whom Allah Ta‘ala has described in the 19th juz of the Quraan Majeed).  By Allah! You were from the most sincere and humble people, you took pity on the orphans and destitute and disliked those who were deceptive and arrogant.” (Mustadrak Haakim #5148)

With these words, Sayyiduna Mu‘aaz رضي الله عنه completed the burial of Sayyiduna Abu ‘Ubaidah رضي الله عنه.

May Allah Ta‘ala be pleased with them all, aameen.
