Hazrat Uthman رضي الله عنه narrates that our Master Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم said,
خَيْرُكُمْ مَنْ تَعَلَّمَ الْقُرْآنَ وَعَلَّمَهُ
“The best amongst you is he who learns Quran and teaches it.” (Tirmizi #2907)
It is mentioned in another narration,
إِنَّ خَيْرَكُمْ مَنْ عَلَّمَ الْقُرْآنَ أَوْ تَعَلَّمَهُ
“Indeed! The best amongst you is he who teaches Quran or learns it.” (Musnad Ahmad #412)
Commentary
This Hadith shows that the best occupation one can involve himself in is the learning and teaching of Quran. The second narration establishes being the best for the teacher and learner of Quran individually.
Hazrat Abu Abdir Rahman Sulami رحمه الله, one of the narrators of this Hadith says a beautiful statement,
فَذَاكَ الَّذِيْ أَقَعَدَنِيْ مَقْعَدِيْ هَذَا
“That (this Mubarak Hadith of Nabi صلى الله عليه وسلم) is what has caused me to be seated where I am (as a teacher of Quran).”
It was this Hadith that caused him to be involved in teaching Quran from the Khilafat of Hazrat Uthman رضي الله عنه up until the time of Hajjaj bin Yusuf. (Tirmizi #2907)
This time period is explained to be an amazing forty years! (Hamish Kawkab, Tahzeebu Tahzeeb v.5 pg.184)
عن أبي عبد الرحمن، عن عثمان بن عفان، أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: خيركم من تعلم القرآن وعلمه قال أبو عبد الرحمن: فذاك الذي أقعدني مقعدي هذا، وعلم القرآن في زمن عثمان حتى بلغ الحجاج بن يوسف. هذا حديث حسن صحيح. (سنن الترمذي رقم2907)
عن أبي عبد الرحمن السلمي عن عثمان بن عفان، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، أنه قال: ” إن خيركم من علم القرآن أو تعلمه “. قال محمد بن جعفر وحجاج: قال: فقال أبو عبد الرحمن: فذاك الذي أقعدني هذا المقعد. (مسند أحمد رقم412)
