The Causes of Calamaties

Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Umar رضي الله عنه narrates that Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم turned to us and said,

O group of Muhajireen, there are five things regarding which you (my Ummah) will be tested, and I seek refuge with Allah that you live to see them.

When immorality appears among a nation to such an extent that they openly commit it, then such plagues and diseases spread among them which never occurred to their predecessors.

When they cheat in weigh and measure, then they are struck with famine, severe calamity and the oppression of their rulers.

When they refrain from discharging the Zakah of their wealth, then they are deprived of rain from the skies. Were it not for the animals, no rain would fall on them.

When they break their covenant with Allah and His Messenger, then Allah besets their enemies upon them who then take some of their wealth which is in their possession.

When their leaders do not rule according to the Book of Allah and seek all good from that which Allah has revealed, then Allah causes internal fighting amongst themselves.” (Ibn Majah #4019)
