Hazrat Anas رضي الله عنه reports that Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم said, “The most merciful of my ummah towards my ummah is Hazrat Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه, and the most staunch in (upholding) the command of Allah Ta‘ala is Hazrat ‘Umar رضي الله عنه, and the most true in hayaa is Hazrat ‘Uthmaan bin ‘Affaan رضي الله عنه, and the most knowledgeable regarding halaal and haraam is Hazrat Mu‘aaz bin Jabal رضي الله عنه, and the most knowledgeable regarding the masaa’il of inheritance is Hazrat Zaid bin Thaabit رضي الله عنه, and the most knowledgeable regarding the recitation of the Qur’aan Majeed is Hazrat Ubayy bin Ka‘b رضي الله عنه, and every Ummah has a trustee, and the trustee of this ummah is Hazrat Abu ‘Ubaidah bin Jarraah رضي الله عنه.”

REFLECTIONS
This Hadith highlights the outstanding qualities of the various Sahaabah رضي الله عنهم.
Rasulullah صلی الله عليه وسلم also made mention of Hayaa being a salient feature in the life of Sayyiduna Uthmaan رضي الله عنه.
From among the core values that Islam encourages us to adopt is that of Hayaa (shame and respect). Hayaa is the stepping stone to acquiring the true morals, values and ethics of Islam.
Rasulullah صلی الله عليه وسلم has said, “Every religion has a distinguishing characteristic, and the distinguishing characteristic of Islam is hayaa (shame and respect).” (Muwatta Maalik #1610)
Though hayaa relates to all departments of one’s deeni and worldly life, observing hayaa between males and females in their dealings is from among the most important and essential teachings of Islam. Hence, Rasulullah’s صلى الله عليه وسلم desire for the males and females of this ummah was for them to observe purdah among themselves, and for them not to have any type of contact with each other.
