Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم and Hazrat Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه had escaped from the kuffaar and set out for the hijrah during the night. The following morning when Hazrat ‘Ali رضي الله عنه emerged from the home of Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم, the disbelievers asked him regarding the whereabouts of Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم. Hazrat ‘Ali رضي الله عنه told them that he did not know.
Thereafter, Hazrat ‘Ali رضي الله عنه began returning all the amaanaat and trusts, which the people of Makkah had left in the safekeeping of Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم, to their owners. After fulfilling this responsibility, which was assigned to him by Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم, he departed from Makkah Mukarramah on his journey of hijrah to Madinah Munawwarah. He would remain in hiding throughout the day and travel at night. Hazrat ‘Ali رضي الله عنه had no animal to serve as a conveyance, and hence he performed his hijrah on foot.
When Hazrat ‘Ali رضي الله عنه eventually arrived in Madinah Munawwarah, Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم was filled with joy and called for Hazrat ‘Ali رضي الله عنه. However, on account of the long journey which Hazrat ‘Ali رضي الله عنه had made on foot, his feet had become swollen and were bleeding, due to which he was unable to walk. Thus, instead of him coming to Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم, Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم went to him, and on seeing the condition of his feet, Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم began to tear out of compassion and sympathy.
Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم then placed some of his blessed saliva on his hands and thereafter applied it to the feet of Hazrat ‘Ali رضي الله عنه. Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم also made du‘aa for the feet of Hazrat ‘Ali رضي الله عنه to heal and recover from this injury.
As a result of the blessed saliva of Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم being applied to his feet, and Rasulullah صلى الله عليه وسلم making du‘aa for his feet, Hazrat ‘Ali رضي الله عنه never again suffered with pain in his feet, until the day he was martyred.
